Are Virtual Coaching Apps Satisfying a Growing Need? Career coaches have long been recognized as an excellent source of guidance to help employees find greater fulfillment in their careers and assist them with building the skills they need to advance into higher-level roles. These coaches have been in high demand, and this growth is only likely to continue. According to research from the International Coaching Federation (ICF), the number of career coaches grew 33% between 2015 and 2019. Despite the growing number of career coaches, the pandemic has introduced considerable difficulty in acquiring the traditional face-to-face coaching most employees are accustomed to. As a result, the ICF has found in a 2020 survey focused on the effects of COVID-19 on coaching that in-person coaching had declined by 80%, and the use of audio-visual platforms to provide coaching had grown by 74%. In addition, this movement to virtual coaching has led to the rise of coaching apps which many HR professionals can use to supplement traditional coaching. Advantages and Disadvantages of Coaching Apps Coaching apps can offer some benefits over traditional coaching, such as convenience, flexibility, and comfort, while still offering the same benefits of allowing employees to discover more about the career they want as well as themself. These apps can also be useful for keeping people motivated and on course to achieving their goals. Virtual coaching may also feel comfortable for those who work remotely because this is how they interact with their co-workers and managers. Interacting virtually has become the normal way of communicating for many people. Many people choose remote work when they have the opportunity. This has led to increased productivity for a number of these people, along with an improved work-life balance. Receiving career coaching from home can allow people to feel more comfortable, thus making them more likely to communicate freely. Clients tend to be more open and honest about what they want when they are alone in their own home rather than in a community setting with a group of other people. This can help clients discover industries or jobs they are interested in researching. There are some disadvantages to digital coaching as well. Some people may not take digital coaching as seriously as they would in-person career coaching. Although, this may be helped by including it in an official career development program. Career coaching apps may work well for people who are self-motivated, and they have the advantage of allowing workers to complete the program at their own pace. But, it is not the best choice for employees that need extra support. In this situation, human coaching would be the better choice. So, for many employers, digital coaching might work better as an additional option for career coaching rather than as a replacement for in-person coaching. Source
