Employers Are Welcoming Pets into the Workplace: Should Yours? A new perk that an increasing number of employers are adopting could help your company find new talent and retain those it already has. These new perks are pet-related benefits. During the pandemic, it is estimated that almost one in five households adopted a new pet, and now, with many employers asking workers to come back to the office, many remote workers are reluctant to leave their pets behind. In fact, one survey found that 69% of respondents would like to work from home in order to stay with their pets. However, a study from earlier in the pandemic found that less than 1% of responding employers offered employees to leave to care for a new pet, and only slightly greater than 4% of employers would allow employees to bring their pets to work. In contrast, one study has indicated that 77% of employees would like to leave to care for a new pet as a benefit, and many responded that they would rather leave their job than leave their pets at home. This seems to indicate a significant gap between the benefits that pet-owning employees are looking for and what employers are offering. This rising rate of demand for pet-related benefits is likely due to the considerable increase in pet ownership, particularly during the pandemic, as well as rising rates of spending on pets. Employers have begun to respond to these needs, and in a survey last year, nearly half of C-suite executives indicated that they plan to allow employees to bring pets into the office when they return. A study from the US National Library of Medicine and the National Institutes of Health indicates that this could have significant benefits for employers and employees. This study found that companies that help support employees' work-life balance are more attractive to younger members of the workforce, and as a result, pet-friendly policies are of greater importance for the newest generation of workers. Though the study did note that welcoming dogs into the workplace can bring some negatives as well, such as potential sources of distraction and even legal risks, the overall benefits appear to outweigh the risks. Several major employers have introduced pet benefits into their benefit mix already, including pet insurance, covering adoption fees, and pet-friendly offices. However, HR professionals do advise establishing some ground rules to ensure a safe and distraction-free office. After all, too many pets can quickly turn an office into a kennel, so it is important to set some common-sense rules for employees before welcoming pets into the workplace.
