Size Matters in 💻 Online Meetings Since the pandemic began videoconferencing has become a ubiquitous part of the workplace. However, many workers have reported feeling fatigued with the cameras always being on, and many managers have struggled with inefficient seeming meetings with frequent interruptions. Fortunately, as society seems to be moving closer to a post-pandemic reality where hybrid work is shifting to the new norm, researchers have found there is a balance that can make these video conferences less fatiguing and more efficient. A study by Stanford economist Nick Bloom analyzed 2,000 workers to determine the optimum efficiency based on the number of participants in the meeting. The participants were given a choice to rank the efficiency of meetings, and the researchers aggregated the results to determine net efficiency ratings. The researchers found that as the number of participants increased, the efficiency went down. What is even more interesting is that the researchers found an optimum range of workers to be had in every meeting. According to workers ratings, an online meeting including between two and nine workers positively affected productivity. However, as the number of workers increased beyond this amount, productivity declined as more people were added to the video call. The final result the researchers came to is that in-person meetings are the best approach for meetings of 10 or greater. This makes sense, given that most of us have had to deal with complex video conferences by now where coworkers are continuously cutting each other off, unaware of when they should speak. The interruptions lead to meeting confusion and reduce the efficiency of the gathering considerably. Interestingly, the researchers also determined that women favored online meetings by a slight margin, and those aged 40-49 also had a greater increase in efficiency from using online meetings. Employer Takeaways For employers, the takeaway from this study is that hybrid work seems to be the sweet spot. Large meetings are more efficiently held on in-office days to maximize productivity and avoid fatiguing employees. However, for remote workdays, small meetings are the most efficient choice.
