EEOC and OFCCP Begin New Initiative to Increase Diversity in Hiring The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) and the U.S. Department of Labor's Office of the Federal Contract Compliance Program (OFCCP) have declared a new initiative dubbed "Hiring Initiative to Reimagine Equity" (HIRE). This program is intended to identify new evidence-based practices that will help job seekers from underrepresented communities to access and gain employment. In order to do this, the program will engage with employers to change the way they recruit and hire individuals from underrepresented communities. The program will work to remove barriers to hiring along the lines of ethnicity, race, gender, sexuality, status, disability, age, religion, and veteran status. The program will host conventions to discuss policies and practices that will bolster equity and opportunity in hiring. It will also identify barriers in hiring that currently discourage equity in hiring and developing pools of qualified workers from these communities. The program will also work to promote equity in technology-based hiring systems as well as develop resources to help employers adopt these new practices. How Can Employers Proactively Cooperate Employers already face many laws requiring diversity in hiring, and increasingly equal employment opportunity laws have become more stringent. Furthermore, many shareholders and customers look for proof of efforts to incorporate diversity, equity, inclusion, and equity in the workplace. In response to this newest effort from the EEOC, employers should consider taking the opportunity to review their compliance with federal and state laws regarding hiring. First of all, recruitment and hiring practices include experience and degree requirements, job descriptions, and interview outlines for potential bias. Employers should also contact the vendors of any technology products used to assist in hiring, such as artificial intelligence programs to guarantee that they are free from bias. The need to ensure equal employment opportunity does not end with the hiring process. Once employed, equal pay and promotion opportunities should remain available to all, and third-party auditors can help to guarantee this is the case. Employment handbooks should be reviewed to ensure that there are no gaps in coverage, and all levels of employees should be trained in the organization's EEO policies.
