New Data Indicates Increasing Pay Won’t Solve the Great Reshuffling The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics has released new data for February 2022, showing that the Great Reshuffling is far from over. This new data shows that 4.4 million Americans left their jobs in February as new hires crept up to 6.7 million. Indicating that while hiring continues to outpace employees quitting in all major industries, workers are still continuing to exit positions in search of new opportunities. During February, demand for new employees remained high, with approximately 1.8 openings for each unemployed member of the labor force. However, even as many workers quit to seek better opportunities, some workers have not re-entered the workforce. Employers have responded to these challenges by offering higher wages and increased benefit packages, but this has not been enough to bring workers back into the workforce. With more than one million Americans still out of the workforce, it could result in long-term issues. Many employers are likely to continue increasing wages to fill the millions of open positions, even though the average hourly earnings have increased by 5.1 percent for all private nonfarm payrolls. This will have a significant impact on inflation which is already at record highs. This also raises questions of whether these increases will actually bring employees in. As of now, it appears that pay, rather than bringing employees back into the workforce, may simply be leading employees to continue to transfer between employers seeking increases in pay. There may be other impacts to so many Americans remaining outside of the workforce. This includes placing far more pressure on the workers who remain. In the absence of additional workers, many positions will continue to remain open, forcing workers who stay to make up for the shortage. Perhaps nowhere has this shortage been felt harder than in the competition for low-skilled workers. Currently, there are significant shortages of these workers in the labor force, and this is only being made worse as many employers reduce their skill requirements to gain more applicants, which aren’t there even for the employers that would typically hire them. Though unemployment is declining without drastic change, employers will continue to struggle to find workers to fill their open positions.
