Women Rule the World 💸 While Earning Less Women's History Month is approaching, but sadly for women in Human Resources, the gender pay gap isn't history. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) has confirmed that women in the HR industry vastly outnumber men, but their new study indicates women still earn significantly less then their male collegues in the HR industry. The BLS has confirmed that 80% of management positions within the HR field will be held by women in 2021. But, according to a new study, these women may still be receiving less compensation than their male colleagues. The gender pay gap extends far beyond the HR industry, and in 2020 the gap was nine cents greater on average for all industries compared with HR. Across industries, full-time female workers make on average 91 cents for every dollar that men earn according to Narrow The Gap. Notably, studies of the last 50 years of census data indicate that the phenomenon appears to extend beyond women being paid less for their work than men. It appears that jobs held by women pay less as well. The study found that as the number of men in a given job increases, the pay does as well, and when more women enter a field, the pay correspondingly goes down. Late last year, researchers decided to check on how this pertained to the HR industry and see if they could discover anything new about the issue. The study by Qualtrics and HR Brew surveyed more than 500 professionals across the industry and found that the gender gap still exists, which is particularly disturbing given HR's crucial role in investigating pay discrepancy. Perhaps more surprisingly, though, they also found that there seemed to be little interest in fixing it. When surveyed, less than 30% of participants stated that their organization had plans to audit starting salaries, promotions, or bonuses for bias based on race or gender. Additionally, only 46% of organizations were reported to track retention by these metrics or by level, which is lower than previously reported trends. The reason for this is uncertain, but many theorize it may be an attempt to avoid possible legal risk. Collecting this data could be discoverable if and when a lawsuit should occur. However, particularly in the light of recent labor shortages, this tactic may cause considerable harm. Another recent study has found that workers' perception of an organization's commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion can significantly influence retention. 40% of respondents reported that they would consider quitting an organization that fails to meet its promises on these issues. More than half indicated they would be reluctant to recommend working at the organization to others. Women may lead the HR industry, but organizations must value their contributions. Failing to account for diversity and letting salaries follow harmful gendered standards risk women leaving these companies in their history and moving on.
