Woman Faces Federal Charges for Using Stolen Nursing License June 12, 2023 In late May, a federal grand jury decided to return an indictment concerning a 49-year-old woman from Indianapolis, Indiana. The court unsealed this indictment relating to one count of Social Security disability benefits fraud, five counts of Social Security Number (SSN) fraud, and three counts of aggravated identity theft. According to the indictment, the woman submitted five fraudulent applications for employment. These applications, which went to assisted living centers and nursing homes in the Indianapolis area, included stolen SSNs. The woman understood that she could lose or reduce her Social Security disability insurance benefits if the Social Security Administration (SSA) learned of her employment. She also knew she would not pass a background check with her SSN when applying to healthcare facilities. Due to these factors, the woman did not stop at using stolen SSNs on some applications. She also stole and exploited a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license number. This number allowed her to convince prospective employers of her LPN title despite not having a nursing license in Indiana. According to the case, four of the woman's applications concerned LPN positions. It also revealed that she worked at three of the facilities. She worked as a nurse at one facility for approximately four months, another for six, and the third for three months. In addition, she worked as a Memory Care Program Coordinator at the third facility. Throughout this period, the woman continued receiving Social Security disability benefits. The case revealed that she received nearly $55,000 under her personal SSN. She also submitted two Work Activity Reports to the SSA while receiving these benefits. Under penalty of perjury, she declared that she had earned no income since May 2019 on the reports. The woman allegedly failed to include the wages earned at the healthcare facilities. Should the court convict her on all accounts, the woman could receive a sentence of up to five years in prison. A federal district court judge would determine the final verdict in the case of convictions. The judge will make these decisions after hearing and reviewing the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors.
